MASS INTENTIONS

Mass Intentions

The practice of dedicating Masses for the intentions of loved ones, whether they are living or deceased, dates back to the early Church and remains a meaningful tradition within the Catholic faith. Believing that the Mass is the ultimate form of prayer, Catholics see it as a profound gift to offer for both living and deceased loved ones, especially those who might benefit from additional prayers. Priests carry the responsibility of specifically honoring the person or intention for which each Mass is celebrated.

Mass intentions are often requested for those who have recently passed away or on significant anniversaries of their passing. However, a Mass intention is also a beautiful way to offer prayers on other special occasions, such as wedding anniversaries, birthdays, or anniversaries of ordination or religious commitment. Masses may also be offered for intentions related to health, surgery, recovery, overcoming challenges, or other personal needs. Masses in thanksgiving for blessings, family, health, or answered prayers are also commonly requested.

Those wishing to request a Mass intention have two options:

  • Announced Mass Intention
An Announced Mass Intention is scheduled for a specific date and time, with the intention being noted in the parish bulletin the week before and mentioned during the Mass. A card specifying the date and time of the Mass is provided. A stipend of $20 is suggested for each announced intention.

  • Unannounced Mass Intention
An Unannounced Mass Intention does not have a set date or time and may be celebrated by the priest at any time within a year. When needed, these intentions may be offered by neighboring parishes, retired priests, or priests in special ministries. Unannounced intentions are not mentioned during Mass or listed in the bulletin. A card is provided to confirm that the Mass will be celebrated, though without specifying a particular day or time. A $10 offering is requested for each unannounced intention.
